Walt Wilson finished up the install on Tuesday at 11:30am streamlining our new unit very nicely and we hightailed it out of there. Instead of getting diesel at $4.33 at Beach Marine we went across the AICW to Palm Cove Marina and filled up for $3.89.. Go figure! Also got a very needed pump-out and headed north.
Leaving the Jax Beach area behind us, we traveled north to a quiet little anchorage at Alligator Creek, outside of Amelia Island, FL. With only 4 boats at the anchorage, another spectacular sunset and grilling we had time to recharge. Ron and I talked about the 2+ weeks on the Companion since we left Mad Beach and some of the adjustments we have had to make. Finding time to read, meditate, exercise, quiet time and alone time has been challenging but we have managed well. :-)
The next morning brought us through some very shallow and some occasional rough inlet waters as we crossed over into the GA coast!!! We came through behind Jekyl Island at low tide and man was it ever a white knuckle time of watching the depth descend to 3.5 or so, right in the middle of the channel. We might have had 12 inches under us but not much more. Charging past the US Navy base at Kings Bay, GA trying to stay directly in the AICW channel markers, a very confusing area, Ron looked to port and there she was - a SSBN sub right there at a dock.WooHoo, I'm right back home again as my heart does a little flutter! Ha!
We moved on north to an anchorage just outside the Golden Isles Marine at St Simon Island, GA. Sharing this spot with two other sailboats we tucked in for the evening. After dinner we tried some of the sweet wine that Jerris & Max brought. ("Red Ass Rhubarb" a 90% rhubarb & 10% raspberry wine from South Dakota) This cruising life is tough! :-)
So, here we are today Thursday (5/15) and we have been socked-in for another day here at the anchorage. Woke up to an overcast, windy, rainy day. Great day to read and maybe a game of scrabble after dinner!
Tomorrow we celebrate our 1000th mile since it all began in Pensacola. We have made a reservation at Sunbury Crab Co. Marina on the Medberry River.
