Fernandina Beach, FL

We arrived at Frenandina Beach, FL yesterday (8/26). WOW, the trip down from St. Simon's Island to Fernandina was only 41 miles but it was the most unusual experience of our boating life. Thunderstorm after thunderstorm went by where we had to dodge it or drop the anchor and wait for it to pass. St. Andrews Sound is not a place to cross on a windy day. The ICW makes you go out into the Atlantic before turning back in to continue south on the ICW. If you have not picked a calm day (as we didn't) you will face 6 - 7 foot seas!!!

Anyway, back on calm waters in FB....After taking a walk into historic downtown this morning we found it to be a cross between New Orleans & Savannah. It is a really neat town and we plan on leaving the boat here.

Moored at the face dock in front of us was a beautiful classic trawler the Pilgrim 40 called "Papillon". We got to meet Jack & Darlene briefly before they headed out this morning to continue their travels north. One of the unique things on their boat that immediately caught my eye was a stunning stained glass window. Darlene was gracious to allow me to come on board and take a better look at it. And yes, it was spectacular!

Tonight after a fabulous seafood dinner we took a walk about before heading back to the dock to catch the sunset. No, Not another sunset!!! I can't help myself each sunset is unique... And the dynamics of all the people on the dock is very entertaining! :-)

Ossabaw Sound - Black River - St. Simon's Island

A Lighthouse Chimney

Definition of Contrast!

Traveling the AICW south through Georgia requires a constant review of charts, tides and especially the latest shoaling information. Of course weather reports are an ongoing review.
After leaving Savanna we traveled to Kilkenny Marina off the Ossabaw Sound, next day moored at Hidden Harbor Yacht Club at Black River and then on to Morningstar Marina at Lanier Island. The weather has been over the top hot so we have not been anchoring for quite a while. Our preference is not to run the generator all night for AC. But more importantly a pool before cooking dinner is far more imporatant! :-)

Coming Into Kilkenny

Kilkenny is a quaint secluded marina just off the AICW in Richmond Hill, GA. It is a family owned business built on the grounds of the1800's Kilkenny Plantation.

Good Night...

Friday morning we traveled to Hidden Harbor Yacht Club on the Black River. Bobbie is an excellent Dock Master and very accomodating! The marina is small  but very clean with a great Captain's Lounge area.
We stayed only one night and left for St. Simon's Island the next morning.

 Coming Into Hidden Harbor Marina

Saturday we had a short trip over to St. Simon's to the Morningstar Marina. This is our last port of call in Georgia. We spent a good portion of the day cleaning the boat. Captain Ron dived under the boat to clean vegetation from around the shafts. Late afternoon we enjoyed some time at the pool and met many other boaters from the area.

"Come Monday... and maybe Tuesday"

It's Sunday 8/24 and we are socked in with major rain. Listened to Dr. Charles Stanley this morning. I love starting my day with his message. He is one of my favorite preachers. Good day to catch up on blogging and finish up a good book.

Hey Ron...look what just pulled in behind us! Oh that teeny little thing??? It is actually the 108ft mega-yacht "Diablo Blanco" from BVI. Hey not so close there! Oh did I mention they carry 2000 gal of fuel???
