Oriental, NC

Reluctantly we left Shackleford Island around 9:30 Friday and headed for Oriental, NC. About 25 miles later we arrived at a quaint little town at the Oriental Marina & Inn. People here were so friendly and layed back and the homes had a New Englandy feel. Friday afternoon we did laundry and went to town for provisions. A local business loaned us a tandem bike. Neither one of us had ever tried that and it was a fun way to travel and get some exercise. That evening we spent time meeting other boaters and went for Flounder Dinner at the Toucan Grill right there at the marina.

Baby Ospreys

Saturday morning at 7:30 Ron and I walked down the street to check out the local Fresh Market. We walked away with bags full of fresh bread (rosemary & garlic), zucchini, squash, kale, kohlrabi (turnip cabbage), home made soap, home made chocolate cordials, biscotti and blueberries!!! Wonderful little town market where everyone knew each other.

After Kathrin's power walk Ron cooked up some breakfast. We both jumped into chores afterwards, Ron changing the oil on the engines and Kathrin defrosting the freezer and cleaning out the fridge. Later that afternoon we borrowed two bikes and took a ride over to a nearby marina (half a mile by boat and 10 miles by bike). Disappointed that the guy we came to visit wasn't around and perturbed that there was no watering hole to slake our thirst (if you know what we mean... Ha.ha), we headed back to the "Companion". It was a beautiful clear evening and we grilled our steak and roasted veges. Neither one of us ever tasted kohlravi so we roasted it with zucchini & squash. Very tasty! The marina had a live band playing outside so after dinner we sat up at the bow and enjoyed the music.

  1. Nice cutting board! I used to grow kohlrabi and sliced it raw into salads - bet it tastes great roasted! If the weather doesn't clear we may be waiting for you in Brewerton... :)
