Savannah, GA

Wednesday after leaving Hilton Head, SC at noon we arrived at the Isle of Hope Marina in Savannah, GA about 4:00. After tying up and checking in we borrowed the marina bikes and road down to the public town pool. The weather has been extremely hot this week and a cool dip is truly welcomed!

Isle of Hope is a charming village of winding roads, old houses and huge oak trees covered in spanish moss. Established as a retreat in the 19th century for the elite of Savannah, it provided refuge from the intense heat and breakouts of malaria prevalent throughout the summer months. Prominent Savannah families build palatial homes along the water. A small African-American settlement in the district dates from after the Civil War when freed slaves from the Wormsloe Plantation settled in the town. Seventh generation decendants of the Wormsloe family still reside at the old plantation. Part of the grounds are opened for tours and special events, but it was closed the day we were there.

On The Way to Savannah...Last Minute Detour to Hilton Head

Tuesday mid morning after leaving Port Royal Landing, SC we headed towards Savannah, GA.  A few hours into the trip Captain Ron looked at the clouds in the distance and expressed some concern. After checking the weather just south of our location he determined that we would be in the midst of a violent thunderstorm in a very short amount of time. So we checked the charts and found a marina at Hilton Head, SC that we could tuck into. We moored at Harbor Town Yacht Basin within 20 minutes of the storm sweeping through.

Located in the heart of the Sea Pines Resort, and ideally situated on Hilton Head Island's beautiful Calibogue Sound it was a welcome site. Upon hailing the marina we were instucted to follow a small pilot boat that would lead us to our slip. Wow, that's a first!  As we cruised into the marina we noticed that we were one of the smallest boats there, a few 75 to 100+ yachts surrounded us. No prob, the Clampetts can hold their own!!! :-)

After a walk about at Sea Pines Resort, a bit of shopping and a cocktail we headed back to the "Companion" for dinner. We met a delightful couple at the marina and invited them over for a bit.

One of the boats moored just across from us was the "Kingfish" a 107 ft yacht from Yakima, WA. It came in shortly after we did and had a working crew of 4, 8 guests and sells for about 5.5 million. Oh my....

Anyway, back to the Sagaert working crew, the next morning we left Hilton Head at about noon. Not beacuse we slept in but due to the tide changes we had to plan our trip accordingly. Between South Carolina and Georgia you will encounter a tide change on the AICW of about 8 feet. So planning is most important.

Charleston to Beaufort, South Carolina

After spending a night at St. John's Yacht Harbor in Charleston we left for Beaufort. Here are a few photos from the trip.

We arrived at Port Royal Landing Marina in Beaufort, SC at 5:30. The day was long and most of the time the current was against us. We were tired and happy to get our feet on the ground! After a good night's rest we borrowed the courtesy truck and spent the day in downtown historic Beaufort.

The marina is nestled in a beautiful wooded location. Just outside of the marina I spotted this hawk.

When we arrived at this marina we were shocked to see two "Willard" Nomad trawlers, since there were only about 28 of them manufactured you rarely get to see them out on the waterways, never mind two together. We went over to take a few pictures and got to meet one of the owners. We used to have a Willard for about seven years. We wondered where she is these days?

It is Tuesday morning at 10:00 and we are moving on to Savannah, GA!

One of Ron's favorite singers is David Peterson from Nashville. One Friday "date night" back in Morganton, NC we saw him live at the Jailhouse Art Gallery. Great memories....  

Myrtle Beach to Georgetown

So let me just share a funny story... One evening at Myrtle Beach Ron and I walked up to the showers at the marina before dinner. Before going in I stopped in the laundry room and threw in a load while Ron went on to shower. So then I walked over to shower and started getting all my stuff out (shampoo, soap, towels, clean clothes, etc.) While I am in the process of doing this I hear the woman next door showering and she sounds just like Ron when he showers. I don't think anything of it and continue getting ready. But then I hear her again .... GOSH, is that you Ron??? Why yes it is!
OH SHOOT, I'm in the wrong room. So I frantically gather all my stuff while Ron is laughing his head off, and bolt for the woman's shower room. :-)
So pay attention to signs! Ha!

 








Friday morning we woke up rested and ready to go! We left Myrtle Beach about 7:30 and headed to Georgeown, SC. What a beautiful CALM morning for appreciating the beauty of reflections.

Stopped on our way down at Osprey Marina to fuel up. They have the best deisel prices we have seen on this trip!

Pulled into Georgetown just shy of 4:00 pm. We had stayed here on our way up north and just loved the town. We caught a class of youngsters learning to sail during sunset. It was fun to watch them and hear their squeals of excitement as the wind caught their sails!

Sunday we traveled to Wrightsville Beach, NC and spend two nights at Seapath Yacht Club. We enjoyed cooking on board, a bit of sightseeing and getting the boat cleaned up for showing. The appointment was set for Wednesday evening at North Myrtle Beach, so we still had one day of traveling south planned for Tuesday.

Tuesday found us on the ICW for about eight hours and Myrtle Beach Yacht Club, SC was a welcome sight at 4:00 pm. Earlier that day as we turned up Snows Cut it looked like we would be meeting up with some fog. And as we got closer we sure did... So Captain Ron said let's drop the anchor and we'll wait till it blows over.
